From Monday, September 15, through Wednesday, October 15, the 缅北禁地 community comes together to celebrate the rich histories, lasting contributions and diverse cultures of Hispanic and Latinx communities in the United States and beyond. .
The theme for this year鈥檚 observance is "Collective Heritage: Honoring Our Roots, Inspiring Our Future." We invite you to attend and engage with our SSU community events, which are designed to explore the intersection of heritage, identity, and empowerment through art, scholarship, activism, and community dialogue.
This month is an opportunity to honor the vibrant traditions, histories, and experiences of Latinx and Hispanic communities here in the Northshore, the United States, and across the world. It is also a time to reflect on the challenges faced by Latinx communities and the resilience shown by generations past and present.

Salem Lit Fest - A Conversation with Julia Alvarez
Sunday, September 7, 3 pm to 5 pm | 缅北禁地 Sophia Gordon Center Theater
Award-winning Dominican-American author Julia Alvarez will be discussing her latest work, 鈥淭he Cemetery of Untold Stories鈥 (El cementerio de los cuentos sin contar), in conversation with Keja Valens, Professor of English at 缅北禁地. This bilingual multimedia conversation focuses on what is going on in Puerto Rico today, from the lens of Puerto Rican urban music star and singer, Bad Bunny.
Bad Bunny has become a prominent voice for resistance in Puerto Rico, using his music and platform to amplify Puerto Rican identity and address issues such as political corruption, colonialism, and the island's socio-economic challenges. Join us to honor our roots, feed your body and soul, and inspire our future. Come enjoy vibrant music, flavorful dishes representing various cultures in Latin America, and great company as we honor the diverse cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities.
This year's celebration will feature several guest speakers including Regina Zaragoza Frey.
Regina Zaragoza Frey is originally from Quer茅taro, M茅xico, and currently serves as the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for the City of Salem. In this role, she works across all departments to elevate issues of race and equity within city operations, leading initiatives such as a citywide equity audit, ongoing trainings on cultural humility and inclusion, and the implementation of language justice practices. She also advances anti-hate, anti-bias, and anti-discrimination efforts, while carrying forward the recommendations of the Race Equity Commission, Race Equity Task Force, and Human Rights Coalition.
Regina is multilingual, fluent in English and Spanish with advanced proficiency in French. She holds a Master of Law in Ethics and Compliance and two Bachelor degrees from the University of Colorado. She also serves as a mediator in Salem鈥檚 small claims court and sits on the boards of HAWC, The House of the Seven Gables, Essex County Greenbelt, and one corporate board.
